Purpose: Tulsa Public Schools shall promote parent involvement in all schools as mandated by Title 1, Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA) and work as equal partners with parents in providing quality learning experiences for every student, every day, without exception.
The Board believes and acknowledges that parent involvement raises the academic achievement level of students. Additionally, parent become empowered, teacher morale improves, and communities grow stronger when parent take an active role in education their children at all school levels.
The Superintendent or his/designee shall provide coordination technical assistance and other involvement activities to improve student academic achievement and school performance. Public Law 107-11, No Child Left Behind; section 11118-Title 1 Parent Involvement establishes that to build capacity for parent involvement within schools a district is to “develop jointly with, agree on with, and distribute to parents of participating children a written Parent Involvement Plan Policy.
Building Parents Capacity for Involvement
1. Program Information for Parents: Robertson Elementary shall provide assistance to parents of all children in understanding such topics as the State’s academic content and achievement standards, the assessments being used, the requirements of Title 1 Part A, Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA) and how to monitor their children’s progress and work with the parents at the Title 1 meeting, by newsletter, Facebook Live, and by talking points. Parents are given the Code of Conduct, Dress Code and attendance policies at the beginning of the school year and given to new students upon enrolling at Robertson Elementary. Parents are also reminded of these procedure/policies during parent nights at the school.
2. Materials and Training: Robertson Elementary shall provide material and training such as literacy training and training on how to use technology, to help parents work with their children to improve achievement. Robertson provides a resource center and bulletin board for all parents at the entrance of the schools building. Other resources are provided during two PBIS sponsored family nights. They are also given the opportunity for one-on-one training with Parent Facilitator upon request to learn how to go onto PowerSchool or other sites that may be beneficial to help improve their child’s academic goals.
3. Educate Educators: Roberson Elementary shall educate teachers, pupil services personnel, principals, and other staff, with the assistance of parents, in the value and utility of contributions of parents and in how to reach out to communicate with, and work with the parents as equal partners. Implement and coordinate parent programs and build ties between parents and the school. Robertson Elementary holds family activities to acquaint parents to the school and each other. There is also the PTA, PBIS team in place to help with the parent involvement. Parent classes with the PIF
4. Transitions for Students: To make one transition to the next lever of education easier. Roberson shall do the following. Preschool Coordination: Robertson Elementary shall “to the extent feasible and appropriate; coordinate and integrate parental involvement programs with Head Start, Even Start, and other preschools programs, and conduct other activities, such as parent resource centers, that encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the education of their children. Robertson will help support and encourage our students to be involved with other schools in our feeder pattern. Such as supporting and attending Webster’s homecoming activities and literacy night. Webster and Thoreau Demonstration School sends a representative to visit with Robertson’s 5th graders to help explain the transition to middle school.
5. Understandable Communication: Robertson Elementary shall relate all information related to school and parent programs, meetings, and other activities sent to the parents of all children in a format, and to the extent practicable in a language the parents can understand. Information from Robertson Elementary is sent home every Thursday with students in their folders. Information is provided through School Connects Phone System, the school’s maruis, bi-weekly newsletter, parent/teacher conferences, email through PowerSchool, school Dojo, Facebook parent page, Talking Points, notes and calls from the teachers and one on one communication when the parents make an appointment with the school.
Other Requested Activities: Robertson Elementary shall provide such other reasonable support for parental involvement activities as parents may request. Robertson Elementary hosts PTA meetings inviting parental input. Evaluation forms are sent home for parents to fill out any complaints or concerns. In addition, there is a parent survey sent hoe twice a year to get ideas of programs that parents would like to see held at Robertson for students and parents.
